The Mayan Conquest of the Kiche
The Mayan Conquest of the K'iche In 1524, a band of ruthless Spanish conquistadores under the command of Pedro de Alvarado moved into present-day Guatemala. The Maya Empire had deteriorated some centuries before but survived as a number of small kingdoms, the strongest of which was the Kââ¬â¢iche, whose home was in what is now central Guatemala. The Kââ¬â¢iche rallied around leader Tecà ºn Umn and met Alvarado in battle, but were defeated, ending forever any hope of large-scale native resistance in the area. The Maya The Maya were a proud culture of warriors, scholars, priests, and farmers whose empire peaked around 300 A.D. to 900 A.D. At the height of the Empire, it stretched from southern Mexico into El Salvador and Honduras and the ruins of mighty cities like Tikal, Palenque and Copn are reminders of the heights they reached. Wars, disease, and famine decimated the Empire, but the region still was home to several independent kingdoms of varying strength and advancement. The greatest of the Kingdoms was the Kââ¬â¢iche, at home in their capital of Utatln. The Spanish In 1521, Hernn Cortà ©s and barely 500 conquistadores had pulled off the stunning defeat of the mighty Aztec Empire by making good use of modern weapons and native Indian allies. During the campaign, young Pedro de Alvarado and his brothers rose in the ranks of Cortesââ¬â¢ army by showing themselves to be ruthless, courageous and ambitious. When Aztec records were deciphered, lists of vassal states paying tribute were discovered, and the Kââ¬â¢iche were prominently mentioned. Alvarado was given the privilege of conquering them. In 1523, he set out with about 400 Spanish conquistadores and some 10,000 Indian allies. Prelude to War The Spanish had already sent their most fearsome ally ahead of them: disease. New World bodies had no immunity to European diseases like smallpox, plague, chicken pox, mumps and more. These diseases tore through native communities, decimating the population. Some historians believe that more than a third of the Mayan population was killed by disease in the years between 1521 and 1523. Alvarado also had other advantages: horses, guns, fighting dogs, metal armor, steel swords, and crossbows were all devastating unknowns to the hapless Maya. The Kaqchikel Cortà ©s had been successful in Mexico because of his ability to turn long-simmering hatreds between ethnic groups to his benefit, and Alvarado had been a very good student. Knowing that the Kââ¬â¢iche was the mightiest kingdom, he first made a treaty with their traditional enemies, the Kaqchikel, another powerful highland kingdom. Foolishly, the Kaqchikels agreed to an alliance and sent thousands of warriors to reinforce Alvarado before his assault on Utatln. Tecà ºn Umn and the Kââ¬â¢iche The Kââ¬â¢iche had been warned against the Spanish by Aztec Emperor Moctezuma in the waning days of his rule and flatly rejected Spanish offers to surrender and pay tribute, although they were proud and independent and would most likely have fought in any event. They selected young Tecà ºn Umn as their war chief, and he sent out feelers to neighboring kingdoms, who refused to unite against the Spanish. All in all, he was able to round up about 10,000 warriors to fight the invaders. The Battle of El Pinal The Kââ¬â¢iche fought bravely, but the Battle of El Pinal was a rout almost from the start. The Spanish armor defended them from most native weapons, the horses, muskets, and crossbows devastated the ranks of native warriors, and Alvaradoââ¬â¢s tactics of chasing down native chieftains resulted in several leaders falling early. One was Tecà ºn Umn himself: according to tradition, he attacked Alvarado and decapitated his horse, not knowing that horse and man were two different creatures. As his horse fell, Alvarado impaled Tecà ºn Umn on his spear. According to the Kââ¬â¢iche, Tecà ºn Umnââ¬â¢s spirit then grew eagle wings and flew away. Aftermath The Kââ¬â¢iche surrendered but tried to trap the Spanish inside the walls of Utatln: the trick did not work on the clever and wary Alvarado. He laid siege to the city and before too long it surrendered. The Spanish sacked Utatln but were somewhat disappointed by the spoils, which did not rival the loot taken from the Aztecs in Mexico. Alvarado conscripted many Kââ¬â¢iche warriors to help him battle the remaining kingdoms in the area. Once the mighty Kââ¬â¢iche had fallen, there was really no hope for any of the remaining smaller kingdoms in Guatemala. Alvarado was able to defeat them all, either coercing them to surrender or by forcing his native allies to fight them. He eventually turned on his Kaqchikel allies, enslaving them even though the defeat of the Kââ¬â¢iche would have been impossible without them. By 1532, most of the major kingdoms had fallen. The colonization of Guatemala could begin. Alvarado rewarded his conquistadores with land and villages. Alvarado himself set out on other adventures but frequently returned as Governor of the area until his death in 1541. Some Mayan ethnic groups survived for a while by taking to the hills and fiercely attacking anyone who came near: one such group was located in the region that currently corresponds to north-central Guatemala. Fray Bartolomà © de las Casas was able to convince the crown to allow him to pacify these natives peacefully with missionaries in 1537. The experiment was a success, but unfortunately, once the region had been pacified, conquistadores moved in and enslaved all of the natives. Over the years, the Maya have retained much of their traditional identity, especially in contrast to the areas that once belonged to the Aztecs and the Inca. Over the years, the heroism of the Kââ¬â¢iche has become the lasting memory of a bloody time: in modern Guatemala, Tecà ºn Umn is a national hero, Alvarado a villain.

Sex Education is the Only Way to Eliminate Many Issues, Including Teen Pregnancy
Sex Education is the Only Way to Eliminate Many Issues, Including Teen Pregnancy Sex Education ââ¬â Teach It! Every society has its array of problems. Rape, incest, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are just a few examples of societal issues regarding sexual intercourse between human beings. Thankfully, sex education is incorporated into many curriculums all over the world ââ¬â teaching preteens about the birds and the bees, about the reproductive systems, etc. ââ¬â and itââ¬â¢s certainly effective in cutting down on these problems; but sex education does not and cannot on its own eradicate rape, incest, teen pregnancy, and STDs; it needs the help of two other elements, as well: 1) Legalizing prostitution between consenting adults should not only be legal but encouraged. 2) Every school district in the world should teach middle and high school students personal finance, success planning, and entrepreneurial skills. A World Void of Sex Education Would Change the Way Humans Live Sex education is certainly a big piece of the pie. Without it, there is no direction in which to steer oneââ¬â¢s life; a world void of sex education would change the way humans live ââ¬â peopleââ¬â¢s lives would be entirely reactive, rather than proactive. With no sex education, it would be normal for 13-year-olds to give birth; or for men to rape others; for people not to practice safe-sex methods and use contraceptives, and then get abortions as frequent as flu shots, or even contract and spread sexually transmitted diseases like colds. But, no ââ¬â we in America begin sex education generally around our fourth-grade year in school, just a year or two before puberty sets in. There may be some Family Health segments in the middle-school curriculum, but by the time we enter high school, we no longer see sex education in the classroom. That is a problem in the effort to eliminate these major problems that most societies face. Do you want to eliminate these problems in society? Then also legalize prostitution for adults, age 18 and up. The world should use the Netherlands as an example. Cities like Amsterdam have ââ¬Å"red lightâ⬠districts, with prostitutes, exotic dancers, and peep shows. The government regulates the field like any health job ââ¬â with health checks, certain health standards, and codes, and so on. If countries were to enact laws legalizing prostitution (the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment), then the number of rapes, instances of incest and STDs would plummet. When adults have quick access to sexual intercourse, they satisfy a powerfully motivating instinct, one that too many people cannot reason within, and so they rape others; or people (teens included) have impulsive, random sex with strangers, then contract AIDS. In addition to sex education, legal prostitution would eliminate many problems in society. It should be legal and eve n encouraged, especially when it comes to sex-hungry young adults. Sex Education Doesnââ¬â¢t Solve Everything In addition to sex education, school systems should also incorporate courses that teach middle and high school students the principles of success, of life planning, goals, business and entrepreneurship and personal finance. This would help cut down on, if not one day completely eradicate, various societal problems ââ¬â such as teen pregnancies, for one, because it would encourage and train students to look way into the future to see what kind of life they wanted to live, the career they wanted to have, the person they wanted to be. They would see their future and make goals for success and develop a plan that gets them to this objective ââ¬â and most times, they will see that having a child too young and starting a family before they even finish college is a life full of financial and emotional strain. These courses would help students take control of their lives, planning them out step by step and making goals for themselves to ensure their success. This would certainly cut down on problems like teen pregnancy and unprotected sex. Letââ¬â¢s conclude this argument by saying once again that sex education is of course an effective method in preventing such issues like teen pregnancy, but there is more to it than that. Equally important is the legalization of prostitution, which would cut down on rape, incest and other sexually related crimes: people would have the option of paying for their sex, and itââ¬â¢s more humane than them taking their sex, stealing it from the protesting bodies of unwilling people. Also, when we teach young people how to have success, they donââ¬â¢t make bad decisions, such as an unwanted pregnancy.

Modernism - Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo Essay
Modernism - Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo - Essay Example The essay "Modernism - Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo" discusses modernism through the works of Edward Weston, Tina Modotti and Manuel Alvarez Bravo. Edward Westonââ¬â¢s career in photography lasted for a period of fifty years. He took his last photograph ten years before his death. The rest of his years were spent battling Parkinsonââ¬â¢s disease. This artist was quite instrumental in capturing the Modernism era during the twentieth Century. Weston was best known for capturing the real essence of life. Most of his photographs were rather idealistic as he had the ability to bring out the full essence of life using his camera. Weston was particularly fond of using an eight by ten inch camera. This facilitated thorough inspection of life forms and was one of the basic influences on the Modernist era. However, the phase of Modernism cannot be represented by one particular style of photography. As a matter of fact, the same can be said of this particular artist. Westonââ¬â¢s career was not static; it transformed with the times. At the beginning, Weston began with a pastoralist period. However, Mexico changed all this because Weston spent a considerable period of life there. Afterwards, the latter country transformed his work into close images. Mexico made Weston get more interested in life form that included vegetables, landscapes and even nudes. Towards the end of his career, Weston changed his preferences and began doing complex images. Most of the latter pieces were don in California. Modernism as a form of art and photography is based upon the belief that particular objects need not be the main characters. Modernism allows for a number of objects to be used within an art form without making one stand out. This is exactly what Weston did towards the end of his career. This was the point at which Weston made a landmark contribution towards Modernist concepts. Using the influences form Mexico, Weston began making photographs that were fugal and mixed up. These images rarely had one particular subject at hand. He made use of natural objects such as see weeds and Rocks in order to achieve this. One can say that Weston had finally discovered who he really was. It is a known fact that most artists normally struggle with surrounding influences in order to forge their own style. It is indeed very evident that Weston underwent these struggles through the many phase of his career. But he finally discovered his true self after the abandonment of iconic pictures. During the f irst years of his career, Weston was particularly fond of centrality and unification of issues. These were all ideas that he forsook after he started taking more basic images. 2 It is also important to note that one of the outstanding issues in Weston's work was the fact that he seemed to take issue of printing very seriously. During the Modernist era, there was a serious respect for beautifully printed images. This is an aspect that Weston covered critically. For instance most of his prints are quite refined. He considered this aspect as the epitome of his work. Other artists may not be very interested in the printed versions of their work. Most of them may tend to focus on the theme of their work. The latter view is especially prominent in post modernist eras. Weston's manner of photography was unique to his work at that time. However, his methods became very famous later on. He influenced other artists in the Modernism era. For instance, he was one of the first artists to mount his camera on a tripod. He was also instrumental in making most photographers take up the use of large format negatives. Additionally, Weston was instrumental in ensuring that prints were

Easyinternetcafe Cafe Essay Example for Free
Easyinternetcafe Cafe Essay This case report addresses the challenges to implement a new logistic system that if well implemented it can improve operations and can convert easyinternetcafe into a profitable company. EasyInternetCafe (eIC)is a chain of Internet cafes with stores in the UK, the USA, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. eIC is part of the Easy Group, headed by the Greek entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou. The original business model is to build and operate on the principle of ââ¬Ëeconomics of scaleââ¬â¢ or Yield Management: most stores would be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and each has an average of 350 PCââ¬â¢s. In 2003, with losses continuing to mount, eIc management has decided to radically revamp their operations. In order to eliminate the need for future investments in new stores, the strategy was changed. It has been decided to appoint franchisees for the new stores and also, if possible, for the existing legacy stores. According to the new strategy, the franchisee would be required to bear the costs of the property and the hardware. It was also decided to move from large stores to smaller stores with 20 to 30 PCs. The current logistic situation represents a bottleneck and it is one of the major causes for the ongoing losses at easyinternetcafe. After reviewing different logistics scenarios and providers, I strongly recommend taking a closer look to support the logistic alternative that Ingram Micro is proposing. If we do that, we could benefit in the warehousing, accounting and transportation areas, through all this areas, it will help us reduce the logistics costs and labour per new store, from almost to à £2,000.00 to à £1,357.00, this and the benefits mentioned before, will help us to achieve our overall objective of being a profitable company. This; will be the strategic perspe ctive that will be demonstrated throughout the report. Issue(s) Identification: 1. Yield Management does not work for every company. eICââ¬â¢s first store opened in June 1999 opposite in London. Soon afterwards, it was quickly recognized that eICââ¬â¢s yield management had certain characteristics that later affected the business model: elC was offering a highly perishable product: 1 hour of Internet access time, cannot be put in inventory, once that hour is gone, there is no way of reselling that hour of internet access time. Although stores are large, capacity is limited; Internet access demand varies, not only by time of day, day of week, but also across other time and seasonal horizons. Incremental costs are next to nothing: it doesnââ¬â¢t matter whether there is one person or 500 in a store, the bandwidth is already there. By the time the second and third stores were opened, eIC had built yield management into its store management system. 2. Current Logistics System Logistics is not a core competency at elC, but it has become one of the integral activities. Logistics for elc means to supply the new stores with their initial assests, including all of the furniture and PCs. This system is a drag on scalability, efficiency and a bottleneck for growth and the main reason for spiraling high cost and ongoing losses. Environmental and Root Cause Analysis: Aggressive use of yield management is a recognized and admired business model of Stelios. EasyJet was a profitable company after just a few years of operation. However, with EasyInternetCafe profits seem a long way off, the assumption that offering very low prices would increase the demand significantly lead to losses of à £80m-à £100m from 199 to 2002. Below are some root causes of the symptoms above: * The stores are too large; economies of scale dont materialize if occupancy is half empty. * Fixed costs were too high due to the quantity of Pcs per store. * Staff overheads were excessive. Assumptions: * Are there sufficient customers who want to use an internet cafe? To-day, most of the homes have internet access, and many others have (free) access at their place of work or at colleges or university. * Are the stores located in the right place to attract customers throughout the day and the whole week? Downtown cafes might attract business people needing to keep in touch, but many city centres are quiet in the evenings and at weekends. By mid-2001, with cash running out a drastic action was necessary: a franchising plan is being developed. It is important that every cafe looked the same, with common signage, furnishings and PCs. The time to sign a contract with a franchise is one week. If the franchisee did not already have space for the cafà ©, eIc would assist in recommendations with locations within 28 days. The broadband internet connection had to be installed by the local telecoms supplier within 28 days. Also they need to Desk installed within seven days. Server delivered and installed 2 days and PCs delivered and installed 2 days. CVM delivered and installed 1 day Signage delivered and installed 1 day. Chairs delivered and installed 1 day. Testing complete system 2 days and also Open for business within one day. So, how much time should it take to open the cafe once the contract is signed? From the predecessors plan we see that average duration of time for all activity. Under bellow we discuss about time of the contract are signed.

Answer Americas Call :: essays research papers
Answer America's Call à à à à à Throughout the history of America there have been several different answers to her call. Every different time period has had it's own call, from the days of Jefferson and the Constitution, to the days of Kennedy and the Vietnam conflict. What is this generation's call? With the Cold War dead and behind us, America is calling from a different line. No longer is America in need of a sophisticated high budget military, but for new minds and ideas. Long gone are the days of fighting in the streets over a lone silver dollar. Instead America is in the race for new technology and the minds and sophistication that go with it. So long M-16, hello IBM, satellites, and laser technology. à à à à à Earlier generations had no idea of what electronics could provide. The strongest country in the world was the one with the most men. Then came guns, then nuclear weapons, and finally computers. No longer do we need to send most of our country's men off to fight. Rather we can just sit some of them down on a computer and do just as much damage. With computers and the viruses that go with them, people can destroy the economies of whole countries without wasting a single American life. Countries can crumble with the push of a few simple buttons on a keyboard. à à à à à But to understand all of this new technology requires a great deal of knowledge. Not just anyone can sit at a computer and make a country crumble. It takes an intelligent person to even turn on a computer. No longer can America turn to just anyone off the street to help the country. So with this in mind, we strive to answer Americas call, education. à à à à à When forming the government, it was feared people would not be smart enough to understand the rights and privileges granted to them; people now should be as equally concerned. Not that the government will not survive, but rather if it is going to prosper, as it has, with all of this new technology. No longer will a high school education prepare people for the workplace, as it did just ten to twenty years ago. Now people need not only a high school education, but a college degree, and more to prepare themselves. à à à à à With the thousands of colleges and universities to be found, everyone should be able to receive this education required for the everyday changing society. But not everyone is seeking the education required. People have lost interest and the desire to stay in school. But with the society changing, people must have the training to produce and use new technology.

Art Exhibit on Nature Essay
The planet earth is the only known habitat for humankind. For millions of years, it served as the home to numerous living things such as animals, plants and people. More so, it has been a witness to many events that have shaped the course of world history. Because of this, it is suffice to say that our beloved Mother Earth has played a vital role in nourishing and sustaining the existence of humans. In return for all the benefits and nourishment that Mother Earth has provided to humans, human beings have showed their gratitude by expressing their appreciation and admiration for the beauty and splendor of nature. For centuries, human beings have captured the magnificence of the diversity and uniqueness of the environment which was shown using various art forms such as painting, sculptures, photography, architecture and many others. In line with this, throughout history, several art movements have emerged. There were the Classical, Renaissance, Baroque, Modernism and many others. The dominant and styles and themes differed in these art periods. However, there was one theme that has remained constant until the present day. This is known as landscape or nature art. This form of art is defined as the illustration of mountains, flora and fauna, bodies of water and the sky. More so, it is a celebration of the majestic beauty of nature. This trend in the art world has continued to persist throughout the ages. Aside from this, it has also evolved in terms of styles and techniques. Every part of the globe has developed their own approach on how to translate the beauty of nature into a canvas. Because of the variety in culture and tradition, nature and landscape artworks have surfaced as distinctive copies of the wonders of the environment. With this, nature had become a worldwide art phenomenon and these artworks have made nature a timeless masterpiece that will be forever treasured and recognized. On the other hand, due to changing times, the seemingly everlasting beauty of nature is apparently gradually diminishing. If before humans respected the significant role of Mother Earth in the cycle of life, nowadays, humans have abandoned their vital task of being the steward. Instead of taking care of the natural wonders of the world, humans have opted to obliterate it. This sudden change was caused by the desire to improve the ways of living of people. Initially, the intention may seem innocent and harmless but if one would look closely, traces of selfishness and greed can be uncovered. People wanted to advance the human race but at the expense of damaging the environment. Because of this, a drastic natural occurrence has been plaguing the contemporary society. This has claimed lives of many people and destroyed millions worth of properties. This phenomenon has been labeled as climate change or global warming. In the recent years, Mother Earth has been experiencing unusual changes such as the increase in temperature of the atmosphere, extinction of some animal and plant species, loss of land mass and many others. These alterations have posted an alarming threat to the existence of many living things. If humans would permit this condition to carry on, in time people would be left homeless and without any nourishment. To help intensify awareness on the present state of the environment, an art exhibit will be put up. This exhibit will showcase the nature artworks of American artist, Ansel Adams, French painter, Paul Cezanne, and a Japanese artisan named Hokusai. The objective of the exhibit is to help the viewers realize the importance and connection of nature with the existence of humans. More so, this nature-themed art exhibit will explore the various perceptions of artists on nature from different periods. It will demonstrate how people saw and appreciated the beauty of the environment during their respective eras. By incorporating artists from different continents such as North America, Europe and Asia, viewers will also be given a 360 degrees view of the worldââ¬â¢s most beautiful places. Hopefully, after they have seen the exhibit, the viewers will have a new-found respect on the beauty and vigor of Mother Earth. Ansel Adams is an American photographer who has mastered the artistry of capturing wonderful shots of landscapes in scenic places strewn all over the United States. Aside from being an artist, he was also a dedicated environmentalist ââ¬Å"who encouraged understanding of, and respect for, the natural environment. â⬠Even though he initially got noticed as a noted photographer in commercial photography, he excelled in the field of landscape photography (Notablebiographies. com). The black and white landscape photographs have become Adamsââ¬â¢ trademarks. Two of Adams most recognized photographs are the ââ¬Å"The Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyomingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËOld Faithfulââ¬â¢ geyser, Yellowstone National Park, Wyomingâ⬠(TheHistoryPlace. com). Adams was commissioned to take these pictures for the National Park Service in 1941. The photographs were intended to be used to make the ââ¬Å"photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. â⬠The main theme was focused on showcasing nature ââ¬Å"exemplified and protected in the U. S. National Parksâ⬠(U. S. National Archives and Records Administration). These two photographs have illustrated the grandiose and picturesque beauty of the mountain ranges and national parks in the US. Furthermore, he used his creativity to ââ¬Å"preserve the wilderness and one of the first to promote photography as an art formâ⬠(TheHistoryPlace. com). Paul Cezanne is considered as one of the masters of post-Impressionism. He is also well-known for pioneering an avant-garde movement then called cubism in the late 1800s. Because of his quirkiness and modern styles, Cezanne was misunderstood by the people. But this did not discourage him to advance his creativity. He ââ¬Å"grew out of Impressionism and eventually challenged all the conventional values of painting in the 19th century through its insistence on personal expression and on the integrity of the painting itself. â⬠Through these innovations, he was recognized as the ââ¬Å"father of modern paintingâ⬠(Pioch). But before Cezanne ventured into cubism, he created several simple yet exquisite landscape paintings that ââ¬Å"immortalized the Provencal countrysideâ⬠in France. In his two paintings, ââ¬Å"Etude: Paysage a Auversâ⬠(Study: Landscape at Auvers) and ââ¬Å"Jas de Buffanâ⬠(The Pool), Cezanne was able to depict nature as real as he can. These two oil paintings were generated in 1873 and 1876 respectively. For Cezanne, nature cannot be accurately duplicated in a canvas. He tried to link the natural and artistic worlds by showing his own perceptions about nature. In relation to this, most of his artworks are advised to be seen as a whole and not per part in order to fully appreciate their artistic essence (Pioch). Hokusai is a famous Japanese painter. Compared to the previous artists, his choice of material for painting is unconventional. Hokusai used wood as his canvas to celebrate the beauty of nature. A native of Edo, which is now called Tokyo, Hokusai is regarded as ââ¬Å"one of the outstanding figures of the Ukiyo-e or pictures of the floating world (everyday life), school of printmakingâ⬠(Pioch). In the ââ¬Å"The Breaking Wave Off Kanagawa or The Great Wave,â⬠Hokusai illustrated the splendor of the sea. Since Japan is surrounded by water, this painting has become the quintessential representation of Japanese aesthetics. This seascape painting with a Japanese natural landmark, Mt. Fuji, had represented the Asian geography. More so, it showed the combination of western and eastern influences with regards to art production. Moreover, this particular Japanese art have preserved its authenticity and oriental aesthetic by ââ¬Å"flattening the texture and using color surfaces as an element. â⬠On the other hand, this painting also showed how nature can be so powerful which was expressed on the giant which was on the verge of devouring the people aboard the two boasts (Andreas. com). Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal Chapter 8
Chapter 8 I've managed to sneak into the bathroom long enough to read a few chapters of this New Testament that they've added to the Bible. This Matthew fellow, who is obviously not the Matthew that we knew, seems to have left out quite a little bit. Like everything from the time Joshua was born to the time he was thirty!!! No wonder the angel brought me back to write this book. This Matthew fellow hasn't mentioned me yet, but I'm still in the early chapters. I have to ration myself to keep the angel from getting suspicious. Today he confronted me when I came out of the bathroom. ââ¬Å"You are spending a lot of time in there. You don't need to spend so much time in there.â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you, cleanliness is very important to my people.â⬠ââ¬Å"You weren't bathing. I would have heard the water running.â⬠I decided that I needed to go on the offensive if I was going to keep the angel from finding the Bible. I ran across the room, leapt onto his bed, and fastened my hands around his throat ââ¬â choking him as I chanted: ââ¬Å"I haven't been laid in two thousand years. I haven't been laid in two thousand years. I haven't been laid in two thousand years.â⬠It felt good, there was a rhythm to it, I sort of squoze his throat a bit with every syllable. I paused for a moment in choking the heavenly host to backhand him across his alabaster cheek. It was a mistake. He caught my hand. Then grabbed me by the hair with his other hand and calmly climbed to his feet, lifting me into the air by my hair. ââ¬Å"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"So, you have not been laid in two thousand years? What does that mean?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ow, ow, ow, ow,â⬠I replied. The angel set me on my feet, but kept his grasp on my hair. ââ¬Å"So?â⬠ââ¬Å"It means that I haven't had a woman in two millennia, aren't you picking up any of the vocabulary from the television?â⬠He glanced at the TV, which, of course, was on. ââ¬Å"I don't have your gift of tongues. What does that have to do with choking me?â⬠ââ¬Å"I was choking you because you, once again, are as dense as dirt. I haven't had sex in two thousand years. Men have needs. What the hell do you think I'm doing in the bathroom all of that time?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠the angel said, releasing my hair. ââ¬Å"So you areâ⬠¦You have beenâ⬠¦There is aâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Get me a woman and maybe I won't spend so much time in the bathroom, if you get my meaning.â⬠Brilliant misdirection, I thought. ââ¬Å"A woman? No, I cannot do that. Not yet.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yet? Does that meanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Oh look,â⬠the angel said, turning from me as if I was no more than vapor, ââ¬Å"General Hospital is starting.â⬠And with that, my secret Bible was safe. What did he mean by ââ¬Å"yetâ⬠? At least this Matthew mentions the Magi. One sentence, but that's one more than I've gotten in his Gospel so far. Our second day in Jerusalem we went to see the great Rabbi Hillel. (Rabbi means teacher in Hebrew ââ¬â you knew that, right?) Hillel looked to be a hundred years old, his beard and hair were long and white, and his eyes were clouded over, his irises milk white. His skin was leathery-brown from sitting in the sun and his nose was long and hooked, giving him the aspect of a great, blind eagle. He held class all morning in the outer courtyard of the Temple. We sat quietly, listening to him recite from the Torah and interpret the verses, taking questions and engaging in arguments with the Pharisees, who tried to infuse the Law into every minute detail of life. Toward the end of Hillel's morning lectures, Jakan, the camel-sucking husband-to-be of my beloved Maggie, asked Hillel if it would be a sin to eat an egg that had been laid on the Sabbath. ââ¬Å"What are you, stupid? The Lord doesn't give a damn what a chicken does on the Sabbath, you nimrod! It's a chicken. If a Jew lays an egg on the Sabbath, that's probably a sin, come see me then. Otherwise don't waste my friggin' time with that nonsense. Now go away, I'm hungry and I need a nap. All of you, scram.â⬠Joshua looked at me and grinned. ââ¬Å"He's not what I expected,â⬠he whispered. ââ¬Å"Knows a nimrod when he sees ââ¬â uh ââ¬â hears one, though,â⬠I said. (Nimrod was an ancient king who died of suffocation after he wondered aloud in front of his guards what it would be like to have your own head stuck up your ass.) A boy younger than us helped the old man to his feet and began to lead him away toward the Temple gate. I ran up and took the priest's other arm. ââ¬Å"Rabbi, my friend has come from far away to talk to you. Can you help him?â⬠The old man stopped. ââ¬Å"Where is your friend?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then why isn't he talking for himself? Where do you come from, kid?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nazareth,â⬠Joshua said, ââ¬Å"but I was born in Bethlehem. I am Joshua bar Joseph.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh yeah, I've talked to your mother.â⬠ââ¬Å"You have?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure, almost every time she and your father come to Jerusalem for a feast she tries to see me. She thinks you're the Messiah.â⬠Joshua swallowed hard. ââ¬Å"Am I?â⬠Hillel snorted. ââ¬Å"Do you want to be the Messiah?â⬠Joshua looked at me as if I might have the answer. I shrugged. ââ¬Å"I don't know,â⬠Josh finally said. ââ¬Å"I thought I was just supposed to do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you think you're the Messiah?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not sure I should say.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's smart,â⬠Hillel said. ââ¬Å"You shouldn't say. You can think you're the Messiah all that you want, just don't tell anyone.â⬠ââ¬Å"But if I don't tell them, they won't know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly. You can think you're a palm tree if you want, just don't tell anyone. You can think you're a flock of seagulls, just don't tell anyone. You get my meaning? Now I have to go eat. I'm old and I'm hungry and I want to go eat now, so just in case I die before supper I won't go hungry.â⬠ââ¬Å"But he really is the Messiah,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Oh yeah,â⬠Hillel said, grabbing my shoulder, then feeling for my head so he could scream into my ear. ââ¬Å"What do you know? You're an ignorant kid. How old are you? Twelve? Thirteen?â⬠ââ¬Å"Thirteen.â⬠ââ¬Å"How could you, at thirteen, know anything? I'm eighty-four and I don't know shit.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you're wise,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I'm wise enough to know that I don't know shit. Now go away.â⬠ââ¬Å"Should I ask the Holy of Holies?â⬠Joshua said. Hillel swung at the air, as if to slap Joshua, but missed by a foot. ââ¬Å"It's a box. I saw it when I could still see, and I can tell you that it's a box. And you know what else, if there were tablets in it, they aren't there now. So if you want to talk to a box, and probably be executed for trying to get into the chamber where it's kept, you go right ahead.â⬠The breath seemed to be knocked out of Joshua's body and I thought he would faint on the spot. How could the greatest teacher in all of Israel speak of the Ark of the Covenant in such a way? How could a man who obviously knew every word of the Torah, and all the teachings written since, how could he claim not to know anything? Hillel seemed to sense Joshua's distress. ââ¬Å"Look, kid, your mother says that some very wise men came to Bethlehem to see you when you were born. They obviously knew something that no one else knew. Why don't you go see them? Ask them about being the Messiah.â⬠ââ¬Å"So you aren't going to tell him how to be the Messiah?â⬠I asked. Again Hillel reached out for Joshua, but this time without any anger. He found Joshua's cheek, and stroked it with his palsied hand. ââ¬Å"I don't believe there will be a Messiah, and at this point, I'm not sure it would make a difference to me. Our people have spent more time in slavery or under the heels of foreign kings than we have spent free, so who is to say that it is God's will that we be free at all? Who is to say that God concerns himself with us in any way, beyond allowing us to be? I don't think that he does. So know this, little one. Whether you are the Messiah, or you become a rabbi, or even if you are nothing more than a farmer, here is the sum of all I can teach you, and all that I know: treat others as you would like to be treated. Can you remember that?â⬠Joshua nodded and the old man smiled. ââ¬Å"Go find your wise men, Joshua bar Joseph.â⬠What we did was stay in the Temple while Joshua grilled every priest, guard, even Pharisee about the Magi who had come to Jerusalem thirteen years before. Evidently it wasn't as big an event for others as it was for Josh's family, because no one had any idea what he was talking about. By the time he'd been at it for a couple of hours he was literally screaming into the faces of a group of Pharisees. ââ¬Å"Three of them. Magicians. They came because they saw a star over Bethlehem. They were carrying gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Come on, you're all old. You're supposed to be wise. Think!â⬠Needless to say, they weren't pleased. ââ¬Å"Who is this boy who would question our knowledge? He knows nothing of the Torah and the prophets and yet berates us for not remembering three insignificant travelers.â⬠It was the wrong thing to say to Joshua. No one had studied the Torah harder. No one knew scripture better. ââ¬Å"Ask me any question, Pharisee,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"Ask anything.â⬠In retrospect, after having grown up, somewhat, and having lived, died, and been resurrected from the dust, I realize that there may be nothing more obnoxious than a teenager who knows everything. Certainly, it is a symptom of the age that they think they know everything, but now I have some sympathy for those poor men who challenged Joshua that day at the Temple. Of course, at the time, I shouted, ââ¬Å"Smite the sons-a-bitches, Josh.â⬠He was there for days. Joshua wouldn't even leave to eat, and I went out into the city to bring him back food. First the Pharisees, but later even some of the priests came to quiz Joshua, to try to throw him some question about some obscure Hebrew king or general. They made him recite the lineages from all the books of the Bible, yet he did not waver. Myself, I left him there to argue while I wandered through the holy city looking for Maggie, then, when I couldn't find her, for girls in general. I slept at the camp of my parents, assuming all the time that Joshua was returning each night to his own family, but I was wrong. When the Passover feast was over and we were packing up to leave, Mary, Joshua's mother, came to me in a panic. ââ¬Å"Biff. Have you seen Joshua?â⬠The poor woman was distraught. I wanted to comfort her so I held my arms out to give her a comforting embrace. ââ¬Å"Poor Mary, calm down. Joshua is fine. Come, let me give you a comforting embrace.â⬠ââ¬Å"Biff!â⬠I thought she might slap me. ââ¬Å"He's at the Temple. Jeez, a guy tries to be compassionate and what does he get?â⬠She had already taken off. I caught up to her as she was dragging Joshua out of the Temple by the arm. ââ¬Å"You worried us half to death.â⬠ââ¬Å"You should have known you would find me in my father's house,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"Don't you pull that ââ¬Ëmy father' stuff on me, Joshua bar Joseph. The commandment says honor thy father and thy mother. I'm not feeling honored right now, young man. You could have sent a message, you could have stopped by the camp.â⬠Joshua looked at me, his eyes pleading for me to help him out. ââ¬Å"I tried to comfort her, Josh, but she wouldn't have it.â⬠Later I found the two of them on the road to Nazareth and Joshua motioned for me to walk with them. ââ¬Å"Mother thinks we may be able to find at least one of the Magi, and if we find that one, he may know where the others are.â⬠Mary nodded, ââ¬Å"The one named Balthasar, the black one, he said he came from a village north of Antioch. He was the only one of the three that spoke any Hebrew.â⬠I didn't feel confident. Although I'd never seen a map, ââ¬Å"north of Antiochâ⬠sounded like a large, unspecific, and scary place. ââ¬Å"Is there more?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, the other two had come from the East by the Silk Road. Their names were Melchior and Gaspar.â⬠ââ¬Å"So it's off to Antioch,â⬠Joshua said. He seemed completely satisfied with the information his mother had given him, as if all he needed were the three Magi's names and he'd as much as found them. I said, ââ¬Å"You're going to go to Antioch assuming that someone there will remember a man who may have lived north of there thirteen years ago?â⬠ââ¬Å"A magician,â⬠Mary said. ââ¬Å"A rich, Ethiopian magician. How many can there be?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, there might not be any, did you think of that? He might have died. He might have moved to another city.â⬠ââ¬Å"In that case, I will be in Antioch,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"From there I can travel the Silk Road until I find the other two.â⬠I couldn't believe my ears. ââ¬Å"You're not going alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course.â⬠ââ¬Å"But Josh, you're helpless out in the world. You only know Nazareth, where people are stupid and poor. No offense, Mary. You'll be like ââ¬â uh ââ¬â like a lamb among wolves. You need me along to watch out for you.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what do you know that I don't? Your Latin is horrible, your Greek is barely passable, and your Hebrew is atrocious.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. If a stranger comes up to you on the road to Antioch and asks you how much money you are carrying, what do you tell him?â⬠ââ¬Å"That will depend on how much I am carrying.â⬠ââ¬Å"No it won't. You haven't enough for a crust of bread. You are a poor beggar.â⬠ââ¬Å"But that's not true.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly.â⬠Mary put her arm around her son's shoulders. ââ¬Å"He has a point, Joshua.â⬠Joshua wrinkled his brow as if he had to think about it, but I could tell that he was relieved that I wanted to go along. ââ¬Å"When do you want to leave?â⬠ââ¬Å"When did Maggie say she was getting married?â⬠ââ¬Å"In a month.â⬠ââ¬Å"Before then. I don't want to be here when it happens.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me either,â⬠Joshua said. And so we spent the next few weeks preparing for our journey. My father thought I was crazy, but my mother seemed happy to have the extra space in the house and pleased that the family wouldn't have to put up a bride price to marry me off right away. ââ¬Å"So you'll be gone how long?â⬠Mother asked. ââ¬Å"I don't know. It's not a terribly long journey to Antioch, but I don't know how long we'll be there. Then we'll be traveling the Silk Road. I'm guessing that that's a long journey. I've never seen any silk growing around here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, take a wool tunic in case it gets cold.â⬠And that was all I heard from my mother. Not ââ¬Å"Why are you going?â⬠Not ââ¬Å"Who are you looking for?â⬠Just ââ¬Å"Take a wool tunic.â⬠Jeez. My father was more supportive. ââ¬Å"I can give you a little money to travel with, or we could buy you a donkey.â⬠ââ¬Å"I think the money would be better. A donkey couldn't carry both of us.â⬠ââ¬Å"And who are these fellows you're looking for?â⬠ââ¬Å"Magicians, I think.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you want to talk to magicians becauseâ⬠¦?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because Josh wants to know how to be the Messiah.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, right. And you believe that Joshua is the Messiah?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, but more important than that, he's my friend. I can't let him go alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what if he's not the Messiah? What if you find these magicians and they tell you that Joshua is not what you think he is, that he's just a normal boy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, he'll really need me to be there, then, won't he?â⬠My father laughed. ââ¬Å"Yes, I guess he will. You come back, Levi, and bring your friend the Messiah with you. Now we'll have to set three empty places at the table on Passover. One for Elijah, one for my lost son, and one for his pal the Messiah.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, don't seat Joshua next to Elijah. If those guys start talking religion we'll never have any peace.â⬠It came down to only four days before Maggie's wedding before Joshua and I accepted that one of us would have to tell her we were leaving. After nearly a whole day of arguing, it fell upon me to go to her. I saw Joshua face down fears in himself that would have broken other men, but taking bad news to Maggie was one he couldn't overcome. I took the task on myself and tried to leave Joshua with his dignity. ââ¬Å"You wuss!â⬠ââ¬Å"How can I tell her that it's too painful to watch her marry that toad?â⬠ââ¬Å"First, you're insulting toads everywhere, and second, what makes you think it's any easier for me?â⬠ââ¬Å"You're tougher than I am.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, don't try that. You can't just roll over and expect me to not notice that I'm being manipulated. She's going to cry. I hate it when she cries.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Josh said. ââ¬Å"It hurts me too. Too much.â⬠Then he put his hand on my head and I suddenly felt better, stronger. ââ¬Å"Don't try your Son of God mumbo jumbo on me, you're still a wuss.â⬠ââ¬Å"If it be so, so be it. So it shall be written.â⬠Well, it is now, Josh. It's written now. (It's strange, the word ââ¬Å"wussâ⬠is the same in my ancient Aramaic tongue as it is in this language. Like the word waited for me these two thousand years so I could write it down here. Strange.) Maggie was washing clothes in the square with a bunch of other women. I caught her attention by jumping on the shoulders of my friend Bartholomew, who was gleefully exposing himself for the viewing pleasure of the Nazarene wives. With a subtle toss of my head I signaled to Maggie to meet me behind a nearby stand of date palms. ââ¬Å"Behind those trees?â⬠Maggie shouted. ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠I replied. ââ¬Å"You bringing the idiot?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠she said, and she handed her washing to one of her younger sisters and scampered to the trees. I was surprised to see her smiling so close to the time of her wedding. She hugged me and I could feel the heat rise in my face, either from shame or love, like there was a difference. ââ¬Å"Well, you're in a good mood,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Why not? I'm using them all up before the wedding. Speaking of which, what are you two bringing me for a present? It had better be good if it's going to make up for who I have to marry.â⬠She was joyful and there was music and laughter in her voice, pure Maggie, but I had to turn away. ââ¬Å"Hey, I was only joking,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"You guys don't need to bring me anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"We're leaving, Maggie. We won't be there.â⬠She grabbed my shoulder and forced me to face her. ââ¬Å"You're leaving? You and Joshua? You're going away?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, before your wedding. We're going to Antioch, and from there far into the East along the Silk Road.â⬠She said nothing. Tears welled up in her eyes and I could feel them rising in mine as well. This time she turned away. ââ¬Å"We should have told you before, I know, but really we only decided at Passover. Joshua is going to find the Magi who came to his birth, and I'm going with him because I have to.â⬠She wheeled on me. ââ¬Å"You have to? You have to? You don't have to. You can stay and be my friend and come to my wedding and sneak down to talk to me here or in the vineyard and we can laugh and tease and no matter how horrible it is being married to Jakan, I'll have that. I'll at least have that!â⬠I felt as if I'd be sick to my stomach any second. I wanted to tell her that I'd stay, that I'd wait, that if there was the slightest chance that her life wasn't going to be a desert in the arms of her creep husband that I could hold hope. I wanted to do whatever I could to take away even a little bit of her pain, even up to letting Joshua go by himself, but in thinking that, I realized that Joshua must have been feeling the same thing, so all I said was ââ¬Å"I'm sorry.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what about Joshua, wasn't he even going to say good-bye?â⬠ââ¬Å"He wanted to, but he couldn't. Neither of us can, I mean, we didn't want to have to watch you marry Jakan.â⬠ââ¬Å"Cowards. You two deserve each other. You can hide behind each other like Greek boys. Just go. Get away from me.â⬠I tried to think of something to say, but my mind was a soup of confusion so I hung my head and walked away. I was almost out of the square when Maggie caught up to me. I heard her footsteps and turned. ââ¬Å"Tell him to meet me behind the synagogue, Biff. The night before my wedding, an hour after sunset.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not sure, Maggie, he ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Tell him,â⬠she said. She ran back to the well without looking back. So I told Joshua, and on the night before Maggie's wedding, the night before we were to leave on our journey, Joshua packed some bread and cheese and a skin of wine and told me to meet him by the date palms in the square where we would share supper together. ââ¬Å"You have to go,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"I'm going. In the morning, when you do. What, you think I'd back out now?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, tonight. You have to go to Maggie. I can't go.â⬠ââ¬Å"What? I mean, why?â⬠Sure I'd been heartbroken when Maggie had asked to see Joshua and not me, but I'd come to terms with it. Well, as well as one ever comes to terms with an ongoing heartbreak. ââ¬Å"You have to take my place, Biff. There's almost no moon tonight, and we are about the same size. Just don't say much and she'll think it's me. Maybe not as smart as normal, but she can put that down to worry over the upcoming journey.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'd love to see Maggie, but she wants to see you, why can't you go?â⬠ââ¬Å"You really don't know?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not really.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then just take my word for it. You'll see. Will you do this for me, Biff? Will you take my place, pretend to be me?â⬠ââ¬Å"That would be lying. You never lie.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now you're getting righteous on me? I won't be lying. You will be.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh. In that case, I'll go.â⬠But there wasn't even time to deceive. It was so dark that night that I had to make my way slowly through the village by starlight alone, and as I rounded the corner to the back of our small synagogue I was hit with a wave of sandalwood and lemon and girl sweat, of warm skin, a wet mouth over mine, arms around my back and legs around my waist. I fell backward on the ground and there was in my head a bright light, and the rest of the world existed in the senses of touch and smell and God. There, on the ground behind the synagogue, Maggie and I indulged desires we had carried for years, mine for her, and hers for Joshua. That neither of us knew what we were doing made no difference. It was pure and it happened and it was marvelous. And when we finished we lay there holding each other, half dressed, breathless, and sweating, and Maggie said, ââ¬Å"I love you, Joshua.â⬠ââ¬Å"I love you, Maggie,â⬠I said. And ever so slightly she loosened her embrace. ââ¬Å"I couldn't marry Jakan without ââ¬â I couldn't let you go without ââ¬â without letting you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"He knows, Maggie.â⬠Then she really pulled away. ââ¬Å"Biff?â⬠ââ¬Å"Uh-oh.â⬠I thought she might scream, that she might leap up and run away, that she might do any one of a hundred things to take me from heaven to hell, but after only a second she nuzzled close to me again. ââ¬Å"Thank you for being here,â⬠she said. We left at dawn, and our fathers walked with us as far as the gates of Sepphoris. When we parted at the gates my father gave me a hammer and chisel to carry with me in my satchel. ââ¬Å"With that you can make enough for a meal anywhere you go,â⬠my father said. Joseph gave Joshua a wooden bowl. ââ¬Å"Out of that you can eat the meal that Biff earns.â⬠He grinned at me. By the gates of Sepphoris I kissed my father for the last time. By the gates of Sepphoris we left our fathers behind and went out into the world to find three wise men. ââ¬Å"Come back, Joshua, and make us free,â⬠Joseph shouted to our backs. ââ¬Å"Go with God,â⬠my own father said. ââ¬Å"I am, I am,â⬠I shouted. ââ¬Å"He's right here.â⬠Joshua said nothing until the sun was high in the sky and we stopped to share a drink of water. ââ¬Å"Well?â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"Did she know it was you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Not at first, but before we parted. She knew.â⬠ââ¬Å"Was she angry at me?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"Was she angry at you?â⬠I smiled. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"You dog!â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"You really should ask that angel what he meant about you not knowing a woman, Joshua. It's really important.â⬠ââ¬Å"You know now why I couldn't go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Thanks.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll miss her,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"You have no idea,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Every detail. I want to know every detail.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you aren't supposed to know.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's not what the angel meant. Tell me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not now. Not while I can still smell her on my arms.â⬠Joshua kicked at the dirt. ââ¬Å"Am I angry with you, or happy for you, or jealous of you? I don't know? Tell me!â⬠ââ¬Å"Josh, right now, for the first time I can remember, I'm happier being your friend than I would be being you. Can I have that?â⬠Now, thinking about that night with Maggie behind the synagogue, where we stayed together until it was nearly dawn, where we made love again and again and fell asleep naked on top of our clothes ââ¬â now, when I think of that, I want to run away from here, this room, this angel and his task, find a lake, dive down, and hide from the eye of God in the dark muck on the bottom. Strange.

RENE MARGRITTE, TIME TRANSFIXED
RENE MARGRITTE, TIME TRANSFIXED, 1938 Time transfixed by Rene Margritte is a surrealistic painting. By watching the painting We see a very sharp and clear painting with dark colors close to the red. The painting look so real that fools the eye and the observer has the impression that it is a computer graphic and not a real painting. The composition its ruled by straight diagonal lines. But there are some vertical lines to break the monotony and to relax our eye. Our vision goes straight to the fireplace because its the only object on white and attracts our attention. It is a strange composition. There is a fireplace and a train coming through it. Its the train that travels through the time. But why come through the fireplace? That because is surrealistic. On the top of the fireplace are two candles. The candles are not lit. But the painting is illuminated by natural light coming from the right. The candles symbolize the knowledge. In meddle of two candles is a black watch showing 1 oclock. The watch symbolizes time and the mystery of time! On the back is a mirror. It reflects only the shape of the candle and the watch and nothing else. There is void space on the mirror. Thats because the mirror symbolizes the mystery of the Universe and our ignorance for the mysteries that Universe hides and the forth dimension TIME. By seeing the painting the observers has the impression that there is void space in the room too. The mirror and the fireplace, which looks like an empty box, give that impression. We dont know if there is void space i! n the room because we see only a part of it. There are also implied lines. Its the painting line that goes from the left to the inside right and the light line that goes from right to inside left. Those lines meet together at an another horizontal line, which passes through the train and the watch. These lines give more focus to the train ...

Battle of Long Island in the American Revolution
Battle of Long Island in the American Revolution The Battle of Long Island was fought August 27-30, 1776 during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Following his successful capture of Boston in March 1776, General George Washington began shifting his troops south to New York City. Correctly believing the city to be the next British target, he set about preparing for its defense. This work had commenced in February under the guidance ofà Major General Charles Lee and continued under the supervision of Brigadier General William Alexander, Lord Stirling in March. Despite the efforts, a lack of manpower meant that the planned fortifications were not complete by late spring. These included a variety of redoubts, bastions, and Fort Stirling overlooking the East River. Reaching the city, Washington established his headquarters in the former home of Archibald Kennedy on Broadway near Bowling Green and began devising a plan to hold the city. As he lacked naval forces, this task proved difficult as New Yorks rivers and waters would permit the British to outflank any American positions. Realizing this, Lee lobbied Washington to abandon the city. Though he listened to Lees arguments, Washington decided to remain at New York as he felt the city possessed significant political importance. Armies Commanders Americans General George Washingtonapprox. 10,000 men British General William Howeapprox. 20,000 men Washingtons Plan To defend the city, Washington divided his army into five divisions, with three at the south end of Manhattan, one at Fort Washington (northern Manhattan), and one on Long Island. The troops on Long Island were led by Major General Nathanael Greene. A capable commander, Greene was struck down by with fever in the days before the battle and command devolved to Major General Israel Putnam. As these troops moved into position, they continued work on the citys fortifications. On Brooklyn Heights, a large complex of redoubts and entrenchments took shape that included the original Fort Stirling and ultimately mounted 36 guns. Elsewhere, hulks were sunk to deter the British from entering the East River. In June the decision was made to construct Fort Washington at the northern end of Manhattan and Fort Lee across in New Jersey to prevent passage up the Hudson River. Howes Plan On July 2, the British, led by General William Howe and his brother Vice Admiral Richard Howe, began arriving and made camp on Staten Island. Additional ships arrived throughout the month adding to the size of the British force. During this time, the Howes attempted to negotiate with Washington but their offers were consistently rebuffed. Leading a total of 32,000 men, Howe prepared his plans for taking New York while his brothers ships secured control of the waterways around the city. On August 22, he moved around 15,000 men across the Narrows and landed them at Gravesend Bay. Meeting no resistance, British forces, led by Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis, advanced to Flatbush and made camp. Moving to block the British advance, Putnams men deployed onto a ridge known as the Heights of Guan. This ridge was cut by four passes at Gowanus Road, Flatbush Road, Bedford Pass, and Jamaica Pass. Advancing, Howe feinted towards Flatbush and Bedford Passes causing Putnam to reinforce these positions. Washington and Putnam hoped to entice the British into mounting costly direct assaults on the heights before pulling their men back into the fortifications on Brooklyn Heights. As the British scouted the American position, they learned from local Loyalists that Jamaica Pass was only defended by five militiamen. This information was passed to Lieutenant General Henry Clinton who devised an attack plan using this route. The British Attack As Howe discussed their next steps, Clinton had his plan for moving through Jamaica Pass at night and flanking the Americans put forward. Seeing an opportunity to crush the enemy, Howe approved the operation. To hold the Americans in place while this flank attack was developing, a secondary attack would be launched near Gowanus by Major General James Grant. Approving this plan, Howe set it in motion for the night of August 26/27. Moving through Jamaica Pass undetected, Howes men fell upon Putnams left wing the following morning. Breaking under British fire, American forces began retreating toward the fortifications on Brooklyn Heights (Map). On the far right of the American line, Stirlings brigade defended against Grants frontal assault. Advancing slowly to pin Stirling in place, Grants troops took heavy fire from the Americans. Still not fully grasping the situation, Putnam ordered Stirling to remain in position despite the approach of Howes columns. Seeing disaster looming, Washington crossed to Brooklyn with reinforcements and took direct control of the situation. His arrival was too late to save Stirlings brigade. Caught in a vise and fighting desperately against overwhelming odds, Stirling was slowly forced back. à As the bulk of his men withdrew, Stirling led a force Maryland troops in rearguard action that saw them delay the British before being captured. Their sacrifice allowed the remainder of Putnams men to escape back to Brooklyn Heights. Within the American position at Brooklyn, Washington possessed around 9,500 men. While he knew that the city could not be held without the heights, he was also aware that Admiral Howes warships could cut his lines of retreat to Manhattan. Approaching the American position, Major General Howe elected to begin building siege lines rather than directly assaulting the fortifications. On August 29, Washington realized the true danger of the situation and ordered a withdrawal to Manhattan. This was conducted during the night with Colonel John Glovers regiment of Marblehead sailors and fisherman manning the boats. Aftermath The defeat at Long Island cost Washington 312 killed, 1,407 wounded, and 1,186 captured. Among those captured were Lord Stirling and Brigadier General John Sullivan. British losses were a relatively light 392 killed and wounded. A disaster for American fortunes in New York, the defeat at Long Island was the first in a string of reverses which culminated in the British capture of the city and surrounding area. Badly defeated, Washington was forced retreat across New Jersey that fall, finally escaping into Pennsylvania. American fortunes finally changed for the better that Christmas when Washington won a needed victory at the Battle of Trenton.

America was ready to change its philosophy based on the circumstances it faced with. This mentality was a
